Breathing contaminated air in the workplace is one of the most insidious occupational hazards because the consequences are rarely immediate. Dust, fumes, chemical vapors, biological agents, and fine particulates accumulate in the body over time, causing occupational diseases that can be permanent and irreversible. Proper respiratory protection is therefore one of the most critical investments in any worker's long-term health. At yoursafety.gr, we stock a comprehensive range of certified respiratory protection equipment from leading manufacturers, including 3M and Delta Plus, covering every application and risk level.

Why is respiratory protection critical in the workplace?

Many workers underestimate the risks hidden in the air around them. Occupational exposure to dust, fumes, and chemical substances is directly linked to serious conditions, including pneumoconiosis, occupational asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and, in certain cases, lung cancer. Unlike many physical injuries, respiratory damage develops silently over years—often without noticeable symptoms until significant harm has already occurred.

European standards that govern respiratory protection equipment:

  • EN 149: Disposable filtering facepieces (FFP1, FFP2, FFP3) — filter particles, dust and aerosols
  • EN 140: Reusable half-face masks with replaceable filters
  • EN 136: Full-face masks for extremely hazardous environments
  • EN 14387: Gas and vapour filters for reusable masks

Our respiratory protection categories

Work Masks — Half-Face & Full-Face

Reusable work masks are the professional solution for workers who are regularly exposed to hazardous substances. They offer a more economical and comfortable long-term option compared to disposable masks, with replaceable filters that can be matched precisely to the hazards present.

  • Half-face masks: Cover the nose, mouth, and chin. Combined with replaceable gas filters, particle filters, or combination filters depending on the hazard. Ideal for spray painting, welding, chemical handling, and industrial applications. Suitable for daily professional use with regular filter replacement.
  • Full-face masks: Cover the entire face, simultaneously protecting eyes, nose, and mouth. Essential in highly hazardous environments with high concentrations of toxic substances, abrasive blasting operations, and work involving strong chemical agents.

Disposable Protection Masks — FFP1, FFP2, FFP3

Disposable filtering facepieces are the most widely used form of respiratory protection for dust, aerosols, and biological agents. Certified to EN 149, they are classified into three levels of protection:

  • FFP1: Filters at least 80% of airborne particles. Suitable for non-toxic dust and inert materials—construction work, woodworking, agriculture, and general dusty environments.
  • FFP2: Filters at least 94% of airborne particles. The most widely used category for professional applications—suitable for fine dust, mold, bacteria, and moderately hazardous environments. Also, the standard choice for biological hazard protection.
  • FFP3: Filters at least 99% of airborne particles. The highest level of disposable protection—for highly toxic dusts, radioactive particles, asbestos fibers, and extremely hazardous biological environments.

Available with and without an exhalation valve — the valve improves comfort during physically demanding work in hot conditions without affecting filtration performance.

Mask Accessories & Replacement Parts

The longevity and effectiveness of a reusable mask depends on proper maintenance and timely replacement of components. We stock a full range of genuine replacement parts, primarily for 3M masks and other leading brands:

  • Replacement filters: Gas filters (type A for organic vapours, B for inorganic gases, E for sulphur dioxide, K for ammonia), particle filters (P1, P2, P3) and combination filters for simultaneous protection against gases and particles
  • Head harnesses & suspension systems: Replacement straps and headbands to maintain a secure, comfortable fit—a mask that fits poorly does not protect, regardless of filter quality
  • Mask bodies: Replacement half-face bodies when the mask itself has degraded
  • Exhalation valves: Replacement valves for masks where the exhalation system has worn or been damaged

Filters

Filters are the functional core of any reusable respiratory mask—and choosing the correct filter is as important as choosing the mask itself. We stock filters compatible primarily with 3M masks:

  • Gas & vapor filters: Type A (organic vapors), B (inorganic gases), E (sulfur dioxide and hydrochloric acid), K (ammonia and organic derivatives). Each filter type protects against specific chemical substances—correct selection depends on the exact agents present in your working environment.
  • Particle filters: Categories P1, P2, and P3 — the higher the number, the greater the filtration efficiency. P3 filters achieve the highest level of particle removal.
  • Combination filters: Protect simultaneously against gases/vapors and particles—essential for mixed-hazard environments such as spray painting, welding, and chemical processing.

How to choose the right respiratory protection

Choosing the correct mask and filter comes down to two key factors:

1. The type of hazard For dust and aerosols: disposable FFP masks or reusable masks with particle filters P2/P3. For chemical vapors and gases: a half-face mask with the appropriate gas filter type. For combined hazards: combination filters or a full-face mask. If you are uncertain which filter type applies to your specific chemicals, contact us — we can advise based on the substances involved.

2. Frequency and duration of use For occasional or short-duration tasks: disposable FFP2 or FFP3 masks. For daily professional use: a reusable half-face mask with replaceable filters — more economical over time and significantly more comfortable for extended wear.

Frequently asked questions about respiratory protection

What is the difference between FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3? FFP1 filters at least 80% of airborne particles and is suitable for non-toxic nuisance dust. FFP2 filters at least 94% and is the standard professional choice for fine dust, biological agents, and moderately hazardous environments. FFP3 filters at least 99% and is required for highly toxic dusts, asbestos, and the most hazardous biological environments.

When should mask filters be replaced? Particle filters should be replaced when breathing becomes noticeably harder or after each use in highly hazardous environments. Gas filters have a defined service life that depends on the concentration of substances present—always follow the manufacturer's guidance. As a general rule, replace gas filters immediately if you detect any smell or taste of the substance through the mask. If you can smell it, the filter is no longer protecting you.

Do I need FFP2 or FFP3 for cement dust work? Cement dust contains crystalline silica, which can cause silicosis with long-term exposure. FFP2 is the minimum recommended level—FFP3 is advised for intensive or prolonged operations such as cutting, grinding, or drilling concrete.

Are masks with an exhalation valve more effective? The exhalation valve does not affect filtration performance — it only improves comfort by making exhalation easier during physically demanding work or in hot conditions. However, masks with exhalation valves are not appropriate when the wearer also needs to protect others from their exhaled breath, such as in surgical or sterile environments.

How often should mask accessories and straps be replaced? Head harnesses and suspension systems should be replaced when they show signs of wear, stretching, or deterioration that affects the seal of the mask against the face. A proper face seal is critical — an ill-fitting mask provides little or no protection regardless of the quality of its filters. Inspect the harness every time the mask is used.

What does the filter type letter mean on gas filters? The letter indicates which chemical class the filter protects against: A for organic vapors (solvents, paints), B for inorganic gases (chlorine, hydrogen sulfide), E for sulfur dioxide and acid gases, and K for ammonia. Combination filters carry multiple letters. Always match the filter type to the specific substances in your working environment.
